PlayStation 3 to support keyboard and mouse for gameplay

Sony has today confirmed that the PS3 will support a keyboard and mouse for gameplay. George Bain, from PlayStation 3 developer support, announced at GDC Europe that gamers will be able to connect a keyboard and mouse to the PS3 and use them in place of the standard Bluetooth PS3 controllers. However, he qualified this by saying that developers have been instructed to support controller input for all PS3 game titles, and may choose to support keyboard and mouse gameplay also.

Keyboard, mouse, and PS3

The keyboard and mouse will connect to the Playstation 3 using one of the console’s six USB slots. The question many gamers are asking is whether they will be able to connect any USB keyboard or mouse to the games console, or whether the PS3 will support only authorised peripherals.

Regardless of the answer, gamers who enjoy first person shooter (FPS) and real time strategy (RTS) games will be grateful that the gaming skills they’ve honed through PC gameplay will translate directly to PS3 gaming. In fact, Sony’s decision to support keyboard and mouse input may be an attempt to capture a share of the PC gaming market. In line with this aim, Bain also revealed at GDC that the popular FPS title “Unreal Tournament 2007″ (currently under development for the PS3) will support keyboard and mouse input.

In contrast, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 console will not support keyboards to be used for gameplay, although it may be possible to operate the console’s interface (”the Dashboard”) using a mouse and keyboard.
