Cell processor may power mobile devices: Kutaragi
Sony president Ken Kutaragi has announced plans to produce a smaller version of the PS3’s Cell processor to be used in mobile devices.
In his keynote at the Tokyo International Digital Conference, Kutaragi revealed that smaller versions of Sony’s Cell processor will be used in the future to power handheld devices such as mobile phones.
Apparently, Sony is planning to shrink the Cell from its current 90-nanometer process to a 65nm process, and finally to a 45nm process. Those looking forward to a Cell-powered mobile phone, however, will need plenty of patience: 45nm technology is unlikely to become commercially viable until late 2006 or early 2007.
Given Kutaragi’s announcement, it would seem that Sony has joined the race to bring 45nm technology to the consumer electronics market. Currently, only Intel has announced plans to pursue 45nm technology, but it is widely rumored that IBM and AMD are also unofficial competitors.
The shift to 45nm technology is expected to drastically reduce devices’ power consumption and heat production.
