PS2 price lowered to $129 ahead of Playstation 3 release
Sony has lowered the price of the Playstation 2 by $20 to $129.99, effective immediately. Sony is expecting the drop in price to fuel demand for the console in the lead up to the launch of its successor, the Playstation 3 console, which is slated for launch in November this year.

Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO, Kaz Hirai, said Sony would remain dedicated to its long-term vision for the Playstation 2 platform. It is a clear indication that Sony is looking to continue the PS2’s lifeline well after the Playstation 3 is released.
Upon its launch in October 2000, the Playstation 2 console sold for $299. With the upcoming PS3 console, the initial price point is expected to be far higher, mosty because of the cost of the built-in Blu-ray drive, the next generation DVD format. Including DVD playing capabilities with the PS2 brought both a boost to the DVD format as well as boosted sales of the PS2 itself.
The Playstation 2 is the largest and fastest selling gaming platform in the world, having sold over 101 million consoles so far, with over one billion software titles shipped worldwide.
