PlayStation 3 graphics capabilities
Sony has teamed up with NVIDIA Corporation to produce the RSX “Reality Synthesizer”, a new generation of graphics processor enabling the Playstation 3 to deliver a never-before-seen degree of realism in gaming.
The new processor will connect directly to Cell, PS3’s ultra-fast advanced microprocessor. Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA, stated, “The combination of Cell and RSX will enable the creation of next-generation real-time 3D imagery that will take your breath away.”
RSX is said to be the most sophisticated graphics processor ever built, and is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards. The combination of Cell and RSX in PS3 will provide an astounding two teraflops of floating point horsepower. PS3’s GPU will be capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution - some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512MB of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has more than 300 million transistors, larger than any processor commercially available today.
