PS3 hard disk drive - not just a price issue
In the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sony Computer Entertainment’s CTO Chatani-san reportedly cast some doubts as to whether the new PS3 console will come standard with a hard disk drive.
On one hand, Sony is not sure whether this hard drive will be not only fully detachable but also portable, not unlike an iPod, in a move to mimic the Xbox 360’s removable hard drive. On the other hand, adding a detachable hard drive that’s not really crucial for game play is significantly raising the cost of the console.
To be future-proof, Sony may want to use detachable hard drives, so that PS3 owners can replace their drive with one of larger storage capacity, should they desire to do so. With the advance of direct-to-disk recording and video editing, hard drives are being made that are increasingly of higher storage capacity at a lower price. No wonder Sony has not decided on their strategy yet.
The price issue may well be the major factor responsible for this uncertainty. Compared to the Xbox 360, the PS3 is the technically higher specced console, and thus more expensive to manufacture. Sony is aiming to find the golden middle grounds of a console that’s extremely powerful straight off the bat, but one that can grow and adapt with technological advances.
Of course nobody can know for sure at this point in time, but our guess is that the PS3 will come with an optional, detachable hard disk drive when it goes on sale in Japan in spring 2006.
