Sony needs the world to adopt the Blu-Ray DVD format so they can license the technology to other hardware manufacturers. If Sony can get a million BD-ROM players into American homes - whatever the cost - that will go a long way to convince major motion picture studios to press Blu-Ray disks for the home video market.
If they can’t get an installed base of players the studios may dump more of their content onto the competing HD-DVD format. Without movie content Blu-Ray will wither on the vine.
Sony loves proprietary media formats: UMD, ATRAC, now Blu-Ray. The PS3 is a good way to help one of ‘em actually take hold in the market.
