The original price that I ever saw quoted on the PS3 was in a computer magazine. The article was titled “Next-Gen Video Game Machines vs. Your PC”. It was talking about how so far consoles’ big advantage over PCs for gaming was price, but not anymore come May when PS3 is launched for $1299. That seemed excessive at first, but then I thought about how expansive the specs are on PS3. It’s CELL processor will be 20x more powerful than any other CPU PREDICTED at the time, and over 40x anything available now. It’d have 2048MB RAM, and don’t forget…a fully operational Blu-Ray Drive (which, as you can see above, is worth >$1000 in and of itself). $1299.
Then I was asked to complete an on-line survey. At the end it said that the reason I was asked to was to help Sony gauge a price range for PS3 that people would be willing to pay. Average? $799
Then, on G4ttv, they went to the Tokyo Games Festival, where a “final” price was finally given. $599.
Now THIS letter says $399. I can’t believe the price is so LOW! I’m estatic! Boy, the reviewers probably are to, let’s see! The first few can’t even believe it! Neither could I!
Only two left, John F. and someone whom I’m not sure is a raunchy acronym for gay sex gone terribly awry, or a youngster who saw a chat room labled “m4m” and got confused. It will be…CHEAPER? Than a new Sega Saturn? Hey, kid, your name looks like a glory-hole!
