There’s no “danger” for gaming PCs, any more than gaming PCs are a “danger” to consoles. Sure, consoles are getting more and more capable - and I look forward to when I can play an RPG on a console that’s as in depth as those available on the PC… but if I had to pick just one device, it would be my PC.
Consoles do have a few advantages - known, set hardware (instead of a myrad to try to support) and very much “turn on and go” gaming - put in the disk, no install required, turn it on and play. No (real) driver issues or DLL incompatibilities.
Consoles are not, however, suited for some games. I haven’t seen (yet) an RPG on the console that lets me get as in depth as I can on the PC. You can’t play a flight sim (I’m not talking Ace Combat, I’m talking X-plane or IL2 Sturmovik level) on the console… not for lack of processing power, but for lack of (currently mainstream) TV resolution and the mass of equipment you would have to get out (a PS2 or PS3 controller for a flight sim? As much flexibility as you have with a keyboard and mouse, plus joystick, pedals, throttle, etc?) And I really can’t see playing RTS games with any depth to them on the consoles.
All in all, it’s a matter of taste. What do you want? And, for what it’s worth, I have both. Sometimes, a quick sit-down (and, on the console advantage side agian, sit with friends on the couch) and play on a fighting, sports, driving, etc. game is just what I want. Other times, I want the flight sim, or RPG, or MMO I can only (realistically) play on a PC.
There’s no real reason for this “Mine’s bigger/better than yours” between consoles and PCs. Get both. Enjoy a wider variety of games. And enjoy yourself.
